The Shelter is now open from October 1st through April 30th.

A Community Response

The winter of 1981, three homeless men in our community died of exposure. This tragedy sparked the development of an Emergency Winter Shelter to be open from December through March to house homeless men when all other community shelters were full.

Last winter, from Nov. 1, 2006 - Mar. 31, 2007 we provided 26,611 nights of shelter and 27,166 meals for an average of 176 men nightly who would otherwise have been left out on the street.

This effort was, and continues to be, led by our faith community. Last year, almost a thousand volunteers helped the staff of the Emergency Winter Shelter at check-in and meal times. Two hundred fifty individuals contributed financially. Forty-seven different congregations and organizations volunteered at the shelter. Seventy-three congregations made financial contributions.
The Charlotte Rescue Mission manages the shelter. This year, we hope that you will join in this community effort!

How Can I Help?

Volunteer

The Emergency Winter Shelter is truly a collaborative effort. Volunteers are needed to help register our guests and serve the evening meal. The ideal situation is to form a team from each house of faith to work one or two nights during each of the six months the shelter is in operation. If you are unable to recruit a full team, please contact us about placing you with members of another house of faith. Feel free to recruit team members from any source you like and let us know the name of the coordinator of your team.

To be a volunteer go to the menu on the right and click on "Be a Volunteer" to submit a volunteer request online.

To see available nights for volunteering, click on the "Volunteer calendar".

If you have questions about volunteering, please contact the co-ordinator, Harriett Mendinghall.

Donate Supplies

Go to the menu and click on the "Give a Donation" for a complete list of all shelter needs.

Please note:If your group is not providing a meal: Twenty-five dozen donuts/ Danish/cookies/ snack cakes are requested. Also please bring 5 rolls of toilet paper and 20 disposable razors.

To make a donation, contact Emergency Winter Shelter 704-333-2608 to make arrangements.

Financial Assistance

A gift of $250 will shelter 60 men for a night. A gift of $1,000 will shelter 250. Please consider adding some amount to your annual charitable giving for the Shelter. Many congregations have a one-time special offering just for this purpose. The Charlotte Rescue Mission will supervise the staff and provide meals.

Some suggested ways your congregation might participate financially are to:

  • Include EWS in your annual budget.
  • Submit a donation request to the appropriate committee/group in your congregation.
  • Ask a few select members to make a special contribution to EWS.
  • Receive a special offering for EWS, possibly a special holiday offering.

Your financial gift should be made payable to Emergency Winter Shelter, Inc. and mailed to:

Emergency Winter Shelter
PO Box 31125
Charlotte, NC 28231
